Happy Birthday Sir Compton Mackenzie

This week (17th Jan) saw the birthday of Sir Compton Mackenzie, Born 1883 and died 1972. What has this to do with porcelain, bone china or antiques and collectables. He was known for a variety of publications and films not least Whisky Galore and The Titfield Thunderbolt.

How many of you have come across a book he published in 1951 entitled the House of Coalport 1750 -1950? I did in a charity bookshop a few years ago and exclaimed “well I never”.

You can read all about Sir Compton Mackenzie as he was later to be known on WikiPedia by following the link en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compton_Mackenzie

It was only when I was driving to a business appointment on the 17th that it was announced it would have been his birthday. Just goes to show that everyday is a school day.

Anyway if you are interested in Coalport china and you can find a copy of the book it is very interesting and charts the rise of the company and the china industry through to 1950’s. Sadly our bone china industry has diminished as cheap imports and peoples tastes and lifestyles have changed.

Coalport china is just one of the manufacturers that I stock at Ooh! That’s Nice Antiques and Collectables, so pop along to my online shop and take a look.
